Fort Collins Profile

Nestled against the Rocky Mountains foothills is Fort Collins.  Fort Collins is located about an hour and fifteen minutes north of Denver, and a vibrant community that has many attractions, which include the charm of a close knit community, with modern day amenities of a larger city.  The city has optimal weather with annual sunshine on an average of 300 days a year.

Fort Collins has a population of 125,740 residents. Of this number over 24K is Colorado State University college students.  On an average, the community has grown at a rate of 3% each year over the past ten years.  The average median family income is $54 and residents are well educated.

Climate and Proximity
Fort Collins features enjoyable year round climate with moderate winters, and an above average amount of sunshine annually, with an average of 300 days a year.  Annually, the community receives about 55 inches of snow and 18 inches of rain.  During winter months, the average high temperature is 42 degrees and in summer months, the average high temperature is 85 degrees.
The community is located at the Rocky Mountains base. Spectacular views of the city can be viewed from the Foothills which are just a few miles to the west of Fort Collins.

History
Fort Collins originated along the Poudre River banks, and was first an army camp.  The army took down the camp in 1867.  Although the army no longer vacated the area, a settlement remained, and Fort Collins City was founded in 1873.  While the community has grown and developed through the years, there are still remnants of the past in the Historic Old Town District and other sites in the community.  One interesting highlight of Fort Collins is that its Main Street was Disneyland’s inspiration for Main Street USA.

Education
Fort Collins offers a stellar education system.  In fact, it is considered to offer one of the most outstanding in the US.  Education is received through the Poudre School District.  Students within the district exceed state average by nine to 19 percentage points in the advanced and proficient categories for science, math, writing and reading on CSAP tests.  Above state standards were scored by eleventh graders on their ACT assessment testing.  Since 1986, Fort Collins has built 11 new schools.

Colorado State University is also housed in Fort Collins and a university that offers a range of educational programs from undergraduate to graduate and professional programs.  The university was established in 1870, and today the university has over 24K students from around the world.  Colorado State University is Fort Collins largest employer.

Also housed in Fort Collins is the Front Range Community College which offers both technical and vocational programs and educated approximately 4K students.

Fort Collins is a regional center for healthcare and features healthcare of every type.  Poudre Valley Health System is the town’s hospital which offers outstanding care and is a full-service medical center with 37 specialties.  The town also features a number of clinics which cater to various types of needs.

Cultural Activities
Fort Collins features a number of annual festivals and events which include performances by the Open Stage Theatre Company, the Fort Collins Symphony Orchestra, and the Canyon Concert Ballet.  The community also features many events performed by nationally acclaimed musicians and performers as well as local groups.  Concert series are enjoyed in the summer.  Other community favorites include the Sweatsville Zoo, art galleries, and museums.

Senior Living
Fort Collins has some of the finest amenities for seniors with numerous housing choices, educational opportunities, volunteer groups, and employment.  The Fort Collins Senior Center also offers a number of activities for seniors that include outdoor recreation, computer training, fitness, and arts and crafts, and day trips to popular Northern Colorado destinations.

Fort Collins features a variety of places to shop which are outstanding!  Over 100 nationwide retailers and local stores are featured at the Foothills Fashion Mall, which includes a food court, and many unique and exciting shops.  Restaurants and specialty stores are featured in Historic Downtown Fort Collins in an outdoor pedestrian mall.  The town also features many centers throughout the neighborhoods and town.

Dining
Fort Collins features a variety of satisfying restaurants from delicious Italian to spicy Mexican to exotic Vietnamese that will definitely please the palate.  The town also features many local microbreweries.
